Difference between a Trading Strategy & Trading Plan (included are my Strategies)

Dear Fellow Traders,

You know that as a trader you need a solid trading plan. A solid trading plan is the cornerstone of your trading business.

Unfortunately many traders think that all they need is a trading strategy. This is NOT the case!

Let me explain the difference between a trading strategy and a trading plan.
A Trading Strategy tells you when to enter and when to exit trades.

A Trading plan is more comprehensive and covers at least 7 elements
1. The market(s) you want to trade (e.g. Forex, Indices, Gold)
2. The timeframes you want to trade (e.g. 1 min, 15 min, tick or range bars)
3. A brief description of the strategy you wish to use encompassing Reward:Risk Ratio
4. The entry rules of the strategy
5. The exit rules of the strategy
6. Other important rules like when to trade and when not to trade
7. The money management approach you are using that promotes consistency without over leveraging

You will notice when trading live in the room with me, I approach the markets with multiple trading strategies and may use one or more of them depending on how the markets are behaving.

SIMPLE Strategy
This is a Trend-Following Strategy that works well in trending markets. It involves setting 2 targets (T1 & T2) and scaling out 60-80% profits at T1 before moving stops to b/e.

PING PONG Strategy
This is a Trend-Fading Strategy that deals with trading during sideways moving or range bound consolidating markets looking for entries at the highs and lows of the range.
Factors to consider include the overall trend, how over bought/sold the market may be, as well as whether the consolidating range is at least 40 pips from the high to the low as
this is a scalp trade looking to scale out a percentage before moving stops to b/e. If the market does then decide to break out of the range, you will benefit from having already
entered at the very start of the move.

BOOMERANG ABC Strategy
This strategy deals with a market starting to trend (i.e. move in one direction). The first move is from Point A-B. Then we look for a pull back to key Support & Resistance levels for the
perfect entry which becomes Point C.

NEWS Strategy
This strategy is for trading ‘over numbers’ which means trading during scheduled high importance News/Data releases.

So to summarise, the main purpose of a trading plan is to define which trading strategy to trade and when.
Also, take a look at my trading plan for reference and ask if you require assistance with your own trading plan.
Remember, it should be something very personal that fits YOUR trading personality and style.
Something YOU are comfortable with, since YOU will be trading it every day.

Updated 30th December 2010. I placed 577 trades in 2010 and aside from one negative month in September, achieved a positive result each month to produce over a 68% return on my capital.  A cracking 2010, here’s to 2011!

Hi Fellow Traders and welcome to Trading Knowledge.

This site has been created purely out of a passion for trading, which if done correctly, can lead you to achieve financial freedom.  As there is plenty of money in the world for everyone, I want to help share that wealth with as many people as I can, as I believe it is good karma to give back, plain and simple!

My Objective

My name is Dominic Nardone and I am a full time trader that has been trading since 2004.  I set up on my own as a private investor who now manages funds for others as well as spend time coaching fellow traders to learn to be a great trader.
